Historical Significance

Kanak Bhawan is believed to have been gifted to Devi Sita immediately after her marriage to Lord Rama by Kaikeyi. According to legend, King Dasharath commissioned Vishwakarma to construct a heavenly palace at this site, intended as a private abode for Lord Rama and Devi Sita. This exclusivity was strictly maintained, with no other male allowed entry, a rule enforced even by Hanuman.

The temple is thought to have originally been built by Vikramaditya and later renovated by the Queen of Orchha, Vrishbhanu Kunwari, in 1891 AD. An edict suggests that ayodhya tourism Maharaj Kush in the Dwapar Yug erected the statues of Lord Ram and Devi Sita. However, a more widely accepted belief is that Lord Krishna established another pair of deities on the mound before King Vikramaditya rebuilt the temple, followed by Samudragupta.

Kanak Bhawan houses three pairs of consecrated idols of Lord Rama and Devi Sita. The largest pair was installed by Rani Sri Vrishbhan Kunwari, the medium-sized pair by King Vikramaditya, and the smallest pair, said to be given by Lord Krishna to a woman to be buried with her, was discovered by Vikramaditya.
